Product Overview

Type: White
Packaging: Bag
Origin: China
Description: White Peony is a literal translation from the tea’s Chinese name, Bai Mudan. The tea's form, a leaf with a light colour downy leaf-bud, was quite unique when it first appeared in the 1870's. It gained its beautiful name as the white downy bud and the dry leaves resembles peony flowers. Fuding is the original area for cultivation and production of white tea, dating back to the early nineteenth century. Fuding has a unique terroir with 90% hilly land, and is credited as the "Home of Chinese White Tea". White Tea has gained in popularity in recent decades and has been grown in other parts of China and some other countries in the world, but the quality and flavor vary significantly. Fuding white tea remains the most sought after white tea in China.

The making of white tea involves just three steps: picking, withering, and drying; the least processed of all teas. Since no firing or steaming process is involved (as with green tea), it is only slightly oxidized. As it ages, the taste becomes smoother and sweeter.

Like Silver Needles, this white tea was initially produced in the northeastern part of Fujian Province, in areas ranging from Zhenghe to Fuding for the export market in Southeast Asia. Today, other regions, including some outside of China, are trying to imitate the production. The origins still reign for the best quality and tastes.

Available for a limited time, this handcrafted tea was selected by Dragon Tea House through real time micro-lot tea cuppings during our origin travels. This is the highest grade of White Peony. This rare white tea is harvested from the spring's first flushes, so it is packed with rich antioxidants and nutrients. Naturally withered, this simple and refreshing tea is the least processed of our collection. Picked early in spring, it creates a delicate golden infusion with savory oceanic umami and smooth, honey-like sweetness. From its true origin, Fuding, Fujian province of China, this tea has a fruity aroma, notes of dates, melon and a vanilla sweetness. Great for those new to white tea or want to experience a pure exotic tea. This tea has little astringency. A great everyday tea with excellent health benefits. It can be paired with a variety of food.

Brewing Guide: Use 1 tablespoon per 6 oz cup. Most White Peonies do well with higher infusion temperature, but the tea tastes much smoother when the water temperature is kept between 90~95°C. Though the tea is very tolerant of mistakes in infusion time, it is advisable not to let it soak for too long in the pot. Keep it below 10 minutes. The optimum time is 6 minutes, as with most other teas.
