Gunpowder tea is one of the best examples of everyday affordable tea that will never go out of fashion. There are different grades of Gunpowder tea, and just like any other type, it can be made from younger or more mature leaves, from different harvests and in different regions. The leaves of this green tea are rolled into the shape of little pinhead pellets resembling gunpowder, hence its name. Gunpowder green tea tastes bold & lightly smoky, also lending to its name. Gunpowder tea leaves stay fresh longer than any other green tea leaves due to their compressed form. Gunpowder green is higher in caffeine than most other green teas (35-40 mg/8 oz serving) and is commonly used by athletes to improve endurance over periods of 3-6 hours.
Today, Gunpowder is still a staple green tea in many households. In the past, it was one of the most important export teas. Even the tea traditions in some countries in the world are based on Gunpowder. For example, famous Moroccan mint tea is made with Gunpowder tea and fresh mint.
Another name for gunpowder tea is pearl tea, and no matter which term you prefer, tea lovers appreciate its smoky, nearly oaken flavor. While some may describe the taste as minty, peppery, or grassy, all agree on its coppery kick and unforgettable flavor profile. Our gunpowder green tea uses single-origin Chinese tea, tightly rolled into tiny pellets that when steeped unfurl into long, luscious leaves. These tightly rolled, long-leaf green tea pellets deliver a fresh, clean taste and a delicate, refreshing finish.
Brewing Guide: Fill infuser or tea ball with ¾ teaspoon loose tea and place in a mug. Bring water to a boil and let cool slightly to 80° C/175° F. Pour eight ounces into the mug and brew for three minutes. Remove infuser.
