Product Overview

Hong Oolong, also known as Taiwan Red Oolong, is one of Taiwan's most distinctive and innovative tea styles. It is primarily produced in the Luye Highlands of Taitung County on Taiwan's scenic east coast. Blessed with clean mountain air, abundant sunshine, and significant day to night temperature variation, this region provides ideal conditions for cultivating high quality tea leaves. Developed in the early 21st century, Red Oolong represents a successful fusion of traditional Taiwanese oolong craftsmanship and modern tea innovation, offering a unique drinking experience that combines the complexity of oolong tea with the rich sweetness of black tea.

Unlike traditional lightly oxidized oolong teas, Hong Oolong undergoes a significantly higher level of oxidation, intensive rolling, and moderate roasting. This specialized processing method allows the tea's natural compounds to develop fully, resulting in a tea that is exceptionally aromatic, smooth, and naturally sweet. The dry leaves are tightly rolled and display deep reddish brown tones, while the brewed liquor reveals a brilliant amber red color that is both visually striking and inviting.

Hong Oolong is celebrated for its rich honeyed sweetness and remarkable aromatic complexity. The tea opens with a pronounced natural honey fragrance, followed by notes of ripe stone fruits, sweet dried fruit, and delicate floral undertones. As the tea develops through successive infusions, gentle hints of caramel and subtle woody nuances may emerge, adding further depth and character. The elevated oxidation creates a smooth, full bodied liquor with exceptional richness yet virtually no bitterness. Its flavor profile beautifully balances the elegance and layered complexity of oolong tea with the mellow sweetness often associated with fine black teas. Each infusion reveals new dimensions of flavor, while the lingering sweetness and long lasting aftertaste make every cup deeply satisfying.

Thanks to its versatility and balanced character, Hong Oolong performs exceptionally well in both hot and cold brewing methods. When prepared hot, it delivers a rich and aromatic experience with evolving layers of honey, fruit, and floral notes. When cold brewed, the tea becomes even smoother and more refreshing, with enhanced honey sweetness and fruit character. Its excellent brewing endurance, naturally sweet taste, and approachable profile have made it one of Taiwan's most popular specialty teas among both experienced tea enthusiasts and casual drinkers.

Brewing Guide:

For traditional Gongfu brewing, use 8 grams of tea in a 120ml gaiwan or small teapot and brew with water at 95–100°C (203–212°F). Steep the first infusion for approximately 15 seconds, the second for 20 seconds, and the third for 25 seconds, increasing the steeping time gradually for later infusions. Quality Hong Oolong can easily produce 8–12 flavorful infusions or more, revealing different layers of aroma and taste throughout the session.

For Western style brewing, place 3–5 grams of tea in a mug or teapot and add 300–400ml of hot water at approximately 95°C (203°F). Steep for 3–5 minutes before serving. This method highlights the tea's smooth body, honey sweetness, and fruity aroma, making it ideal for everyday enjoyment.

For cold brewing, add 8 grams of tea leaves to 1000ml of cold water and refrigerate for 6–8 hours. The resulting tea is exceptionally smooth and refreshing, with enhanced honey notes, ripe fruit flavors, and a naturally sweet finish with little to no bitterness.
