Product Overview
Yan Zhong Lan, aka orchid from rock, is an Oolong tea from the Wuyi Mountains in the Fujian province of China. Yan Zhong Lan Rock Oolong is made from the lesser-known cultivar and is a lighter type of Wuyi Rock tea, with this particular one having a medium roast level.
This tea is semi-fermented. After rolling, the tea is allowed to ferment only until the edges of the leaves start to turn brown a little bit. The tea is then fired which arrests the fermenting process and captures the interesting character associated with Oolong tea. Yan Zhong Lan is fermented further than green Oolongs and the firing process is longer. This production method gives it a light toasty and mineral characters.
Yan Zhong Lan has long, beautiful leaves that unwind and unfurl when steep to release a smooth, rich flavor. With its brown and dark green, wiry leaves that gently unfold with unexpected notes of floral, honey and pine nuts, this specialty Chinese has all the weird and wonderful qualities that oolong is famous for.
Our Yan Zhong Lan Oolong tea is 50-60% oxidized and steeps in a light golden hue with crisp and earthy tones and a slightly peppery finish. It is complex and layered with flavors and notes. It is mediumly oxidized, and our Yan Zhong Lan Oolong may be infused a number of times, with each infusion revealing a new nuance of this tea's complex flavor.
