Product Overview

This bud-only tea is one of Wuyi’s finest modern blacks. It is grown in Tongmu Village surrounded by wild trees and mist. The tender buds are hand-picked from the tea trees. Exceptional golden, fleecy tips reveal perfectly balanced malt and maple characters with the slightest hint of pepper. Rich and satisfying.

Instead of the usual slightly more mature 1 bud to 2-3 leaf pluckings, we started making Mei zhan black tea with only tea buds. Every 10g contains about 1000-1500 hand-rolled buds picked from the Wuyi tea plant. However, processing tea buds into black tea requires an immense amount of skill to produce good tea. If left on the tea bush, healthy tea buds will open five or six tea leaves. The tea maker must carefully control the oxidation process through every layer of the bud. Black tea that is over-oxidized will be sour, and if under-oxidized, the tea will be heavy and tannic. But with just the right touch and technique, black teas like Mei Zhan emerge from the process with an exquisite rich aroma and a sweet and smooth flavor.

The exclusive use of single young tea buds to make Mei Zhan Black is highly unusual for black tea. Because of this, it possesses a very rich aroma that some people say resembles cacao. The buds give the tea a golden glow and an incredibly fruity and honey-like aroma. The flavor is smooth with a delicate sweetness that fills the entire palate. This tea brews a rich golden liquor with honey-like viscosity. Every brew reveals the depth of flavor reminiscent of the rocky, mineral-rich terroir it is from, with low astringency and an exotic fragrance that fills the air. Due to the very early harvest and the use of pure buds, the ingredients are extremely concentrated and allow to make an extraordinary amount of infusions.
