Medicinally it mainly means the dried root and rhizome of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, in the family Labiatae. The oldest written reference to Dan Shen has been uncovered in Shen Nun Ben Cao (The Divine Husbandman’s Classic of the Materia Medica), dated at about 200 CE. Dan Shen grows throughout many parts of Asia and very prominently in Mongolia.
